38 CFR Part 4 — 38 CFR § 4.79

Visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better — VA Diagnostic Code 6066

Eye

Diagnostic code

6066

38 CFR § 4.79, under Impairment of Central Visual Acuity, lists Diagnostic Code 6066 as “Visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better:”. The rating cell on that heading is empty. The block then lists vision in one eye from 10/200 (3/60) through 20/40 (6/12), with a percentage for each listed other eye. Appendix B to Part 4, version date 2026-10-01, prints 6066 once, under “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:”, as “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” The catalog slug for this page was built from that index line. In the rating table, anatomical loss of one eye is DC 6063, and “In the other eye 20/40 (6/12)” on that code is 40.

Appendix B line that prints 6066 — under “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:”, version date 2026-10-01. This is an index line, not a second percentage.

Criteria (verbatim). 6066 Other eye 20/40 (6/12).

DC 6063 row that uses the 20/40 words — Anatomical loss of one eye. This is a DC 6063 line, not a different DC 6066 percentage.

Rating %: 40

Criteria (verbatim). In the other eye 20/40 (6/12)

The DC 6066 heading ends with a colon and includes the words “or better.” Each “Vision in one eye” subheading also ends with a colon. The “In the other eye” cells do not end with a period.

The Appendix B line is “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:”. The index uses the numeral “1” and a period after (6/12). Section 4.79 says “one eye” and “In the other eye.”

The 20/40 (6/12) cells on DC 6066 are 30 when one eye is 10/200 (3/60), 20 when one eye is 15/200 (4.5/60) or 20/200 (6/60), 10 when one eye is 20/100 (6/30), 20/70 (6/21), or 20/50 (6/15), and 0 when one eye is 20/40 (6/12). Those cells do not carry superscript 1.

Under vision in one eye 10/200 (3/60), “In the other eye 20/70 (6/21)” is 50. Under vision in one eye 15/200 (4.5/60), the same other-eye words are 40. Both rows are inside DC 6066.

Footnote 1 of the central-acuity table reads: Review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. It is printed on earlier rows in that table. It is not printed on the DC 6066 cells.

38 CFR § 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on the basis of corrected distance vision with central fixation, even if a central scotoma is present. Paragraph (b)(4) says that where a reported visual acuity is between two sequentially listed visual acuities, use the visual acuity which permits the higher evaluation. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just.

38 CFR § 4.75(c), subject to 38 CFR 3.383(a), says that if visual impairment of only one eye is service-connected, the visual acuity of the other eye will be considered to be 20/40 for purposes of evaluating the service-connected visual impairment. Paragraph (d) says the evaluation for visual impairment of one eye must not exceed 30 percent unless there is anatomical loss of the eye. The DC 6066 cell for 10/200 (3/60) in one eye and 20/40 (6/12) in the other is 30. The DC 6063 cell for anatomical loss of one eye and 20/40 (6/12) in the other is 40.

DC 6066 prints a 0 for vision in one eye 20/40 (6/12) and in the other eye 20/40 (6/12). 38 CFR § 4.31 says that in every instance where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation for a diagnostic code, a zero percent evaluation shall be assigned when the requirements for a compensable evaluation are not met. That zero-percent sentence applies where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation. This code prints one.

DC 6077 is the Appendix B number “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under vision in 1 eye of 10/200, 15/200, and 20/200. Section 4.79 does not list 6077. Those three pairs are DC 6066 rows: 30, 20, and 20. DC 6063 is the rating-table heading for anatomical loss of one eye.

The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “6066” or “20/40.” It does not assign DC 6066.

What the words mean in your records

Two official uses of the number 6066

The rating table assigns 6066 to visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better, and then prints the pairs through 20/40 in both eyes. Appendix B assigns 6066 to one line, “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under anatomical loss of 1 eye. That pair is 40 on the DC 6063 grid.

The 0 is printed

Vision in one eye 20/40 (6/12) and in the other eye 20/40 (6/12) is 0 on DC 6066. The two 10 percent rows under vision in one eye 20/50 (6/15) are “In the other eye 20/50 (6/15)” and “In the other eye 20/40 (6/12).”

20/70 is 50 or 40 inside this code

When one eye is 10/200 (3/60), 20/70 (6/21) in the other eye is 50. When one eye is 15/200 (4.5/60) or 20/200 (6/60), 20/70 (6/21) in the other eye is 40.

Evidence that speaks to each level

The DC 6066 pair

What the rater needs to see. Corrected distance vision in each eye at one of the pairs the DC 6066 block lists, from 10/200 (3/60) through 20/40 (6/12).

Where that usually lives. The visual-acuity examination. Section 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on corrected distance vision.

The Appendix B 20/40 line, read as DC 6063

What the rater needs to see. If the record is anatomical loss of one eye with 20/40 (6/12) in the other eye, that pair is a DC 6063 cell at 40, with superscript 1 on the DC 6063 heading.

Where that usually lives. The examination that says anatomical loss, and the DC 6063 row.

VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Eye Conditions” under Ophthalmological. The file is Eye Conditions.

The exam form

The percentages in the first seven tables on this page are DC 6066 cells. The 40 percent cell in the last table is a DC 6063 cell with the same other-eye words. This page does not say the form chooses between those codes.

Related codes and how they interact

Anatomical loss of one eye is DC 6063.

Appendix B places “6066 Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under anatomical loss of 1 eye. The rating table places that other-eye pair on DC 6063 at 40, and places DC 6066 on the 10/200-or-better block.

Secondary conditions and presumptions

The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “6066” or “20/40.” It does not assign this code.

A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.

Short answers

What is the VA rating for DC 6066?

In the 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 4.79, Diagnostic Code 6066 is visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better, with a percentage for each listed other eye, including 0 when both eyes are 20/40 (6/12). Education only. VA decides on the evidence.

What is anatomical loss of one eye with 20/40 in the other eye?

DC 6063, “Anatomical loss of one eye:”, “In the other eye 20/40 (6/12),” is 40. Superscript 1 is on that DC 6063 heading. Appendix B still numbers that index line 6066.

FAQ

What does diagnostic code 6066 rate in the current table?

Visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better. The block runs from 90, for 10/200 in one eye and 10/200 in the other, down to 0, for 20/40 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. Education only.

Why does this page’s address say other eye 20/40?

Appendix B still prints “6066 Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under anatomical loss of 1 eye. The catalog slug follows that index line. In § 4.79, 20/40 in the other eye under anatomical loss of one eye is a DC 6063 row at 40. DC 6066 also prints 20/40 in the other eye under several “Vision in one eye” headings, at 30, 20, 10, or 0.

Does DC 6066 print a zero?

Yes. “Vision in one eye 20/40 (6/12):” and “In the other eye 20/40 (6/12)” is 0. That 0 is on the row.
