Anatomical loss of one eye — VA Diagnostic Code 6063
Eye
Diagnostic code
6063
38 CFR § 4.79, under Impairment of Central Visual Acuity, lists Diagnostic Code 6063 as “Anatomical loss of one eye:”. Superscript 1 is on that heading. The rating cell on the heading is empty. The other-eye rows run from 100 down to 40. “In the other eye 5/200 (1.5/60)” on this code is 100. Appendix B to Part 4, version date 2026-10-01, prints 6063 once, under “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:”, as “Other eye 5/200 (1.5/60).” The catalog slug for this page was built from that index line. The later other-eye lines under that same Appendix B heading use 6064, 6065, and 6066.

Superscript 1 is on the DC 6063 heading, “Anatomical loss of one eye:”. The 100 percent cell for 5/200 in the other eye does not carry that superscript. Footnote 1 of the central-acuity table reads: Review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350.
The heading ends with a colon. The other-eye cells do not end with a period. Appendix B says “Other eye,” uses the numeral “1” in “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:”, and puts a period after (1.5/60). Section 4.79 says “In the other eye” and “one eye.”
On DC 6064, no more than light perception in one eye, 20/70 (6/21) in the other eye is 50. On DC 6063, 20/70 (6/21) in the other eye is 60. The 5/200, 10/200, 15/200, and 20/200 other-eye numbers match across those two headings: 100, 90, 80, and 70.
Appendix B assigns 6063 only to the 5/200 other-eye line. “Other eye 10/200 (3/60).”, “Other eye 15/200 (4.5/60).”, and “Other eye 20/200 (6/60).” under the same “Anatomical loss of 1 eye” heading are 6064. “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under that heading is 6066.
38 CFR § 4.75(e) says: “When the claimant has anatomical loss of one eye and is unable to wear a prosthesis, increase the evaluation for visual acuity under diagnostic code 6063 by 10 percent, but the maximum evaluation for visual impairment of both eyes must not exceed 100 percent.” The same paragraph says a 10-percent increase under this paragraph precludes an evaluation under diagnostic code 7800 based on gross distortion or asymmetry of the eye but not an evaluation under diagnostic code 7800 based on other characteristics of disfigurement. Paragraph (e) uses “10 percent” once and “10-percent” once. It names diagnostic code 6063. It does not state a payment amount.
38 CFR § 4.75(d) says the evaluation for visual impairment of one eye must not exceed 30 percent unless there is anatomical loss of the eye. The DC 6063 cells are 100, 90, 80, 70, 60, 60, 50, and 40. The lowest printed cell is 40, for 20/40 (6/12) in the other eye. Paragraph (c), subject to 38 CFR 3.383(a), says that if visual impairment of only one eye is service-connected, the visual acuity of the other eye will be considered to be 20/40 for purposes of evaluating the service-connected visual impairment. Paragraph (f) points to 38 CFR 3.350. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just. 38 CFR § 4.31 says that in every instance where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation for a diagnostic code, a zero percent evaluation shall be assigned when the requirements for a compensable evaluation are not met. DC 6063 does not print a 0 line.
38 CFR § 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on the basis of corrected distance vision with central fixation, even if a central scotoma is present. Paragraph (b)(4) says that where a reported visual acuity is between two sequentially listed visual acuities, use the visual acuity which permits the higher evaluation.
DC 6061 is anatomical loss of both eyes, at 100. DC 6064 in the rating table is no more than light perception in one eye. Appendix B still prints 6064 on three anatomical-loss other-eye lines. DC 6066 in the rating table is visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better. Appendix B prints 6066 once, as “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under anatomical loss of 1 eye. On the DC 6063 grid that other-eye line is 40.
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “6063” or “anatomical.” It does not assign DC 6063.

What the words mean in your records
The heading covers every other-eye row
The rating table assigns 6063 to anatomical loss of one eye, then lists eight other-eye acuities from 5/200 through 20/40. Appendix B assigns the number 6063 only to “Other eye 5/200 (1.5/60).”
The 100 percent cell has no superscript
Superscript 1 sits on the heading. Footnote 1 says to review special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. The 100 for 5/200 in the other eye does not carry that superscript.
Section 4.75(e) names this code
When there is anatomical loss of one eye and the claimant is unable to wear a prosthesis, § 4.75(e) says to increase the evaluation for visual acuity under diagnostic code 6063 by 10 percent, and the maximum evaluation for visual impairment of both eyes must not exceed 100 percent.
Evidence that speaks to each level
The DC 6063 pair
What the rater needs to see. Anatomical loss of one eye, and one of the other-eye acuities the DC 6063 rows list, from 5/200 through 20/40. The 5/200 (1.5/60) other eye on this code is 100.
Where that usually lives. The visual-acuity examination. Section 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on corrected distance vision.
The prosthesis sentence
What the rater needs to see. Whether § 4.75(e) is the sentence in use: anatomical loss of one eye and inability to wear a prosthesis, which increases the DC 6063 visual-acuity evaluation by 10 percent, with the both-eyes maximum at 100 percent.
Where that usually lives. The examination’s statement about a prosthesis, read with paragraph (e).
VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Eye Conditions” under Ophthalmological. The file is Eye Conditions.
The exam form
The percentages in the first table on this page are DC 6063 cells. This page does not say the form replaces that grid or the § 4.75(e) sentence.
Related codes and how they interact
Both eyes are DC 6061.
DC 6061 is one row, 100, for anatomical loss of both eyes. DC 6063 is one eye, then the other eye’s acuity. The 20/40 cell on DC 6063 is 40. Appendix B numbers that other-eye line 6066.
Secondary conditions and presumptions
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “6063” or “anatomical.” The DC 6063 footnote points to § 3.350, not to § 3.309.
A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.
Short answers
What is the VA rating for DC 6063?
In the 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 4.79, Diagnostic Code 6063 is anatomical loss of one eye, from 100 to 40 depending on the other eye. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.
Where is 20/70 in the other eye on this code?
“In the other eye 20/70 (6/21)” on DC 6063 is 60. On DC 6064, the same other-eye words are 50. Education only.
FAQ
What does diagnostic code 6063 rate in the current table?
Anatomical loss of one eye. The other eye is 100 at 5/200, 90 at 10/200, 80 at 15/200, 70 at 20/200, 60 at 20/100, 60 at 20/70, 50 at 20/50, and 40 at 20/40. Superscript 1 is on the heading. Education only.
Why does this page’s address say other eye 5/200?
Appendix B prints “6063 Other eye 5/200 (1.5/60).” under anatomical loss of 1 eye. The catalog slug follows that index line. In § 4.79, that line is the first DC 6063 row, at 100, and the same heading continues through 20/40.
What does § 4.75(e) add?
If the claimant has anatomical loss of one eye and is unable to wear a prosthesis, increase the evaluation for visual acuity under diagnostic code 6063 by 10 percent. The maximum evaluation for visual impairment of both eyes must not exceed 100 percent. The hyphenated “10-percent” in the next sentence is the same paragraph’s word for the increase that precludes one kind of DC 7800 evaluation.
