No more than light perception in one eye — VA Diagnostic Code 6064

Eye

Diagnostic code

6064

38 CFR § 4.79, under Impairment of Central Visual Acuity, lists Diagnostic Code 6064 as “No more than light perception in one eye:”. Superscript 1 is on that heading. The other-eye rows run from 100 down to 30. “In the other eye 20/200 (6/60)” on this code is 70. Appendix B to Part 4, version date 2026-10-01, does not use 6064 for that heading. Under “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:” it prints 6064 three times, including “Other eye 20/200 (6/60).” The catalog slug for this page was built from that index line. In the rating table, anatomical loss of one eye is DC 6063, and “In the other eye 20/200 (6/60)” on that code is also 70.

Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was up to date as of 2026-10-01 and last amended on 2026-08-27. The § 4.79 source note prints 73 FR 66550, Nov. 10, 2008, as amended at 83 FR 15321, Apr. 10, 2018. The § 4.75 source note prints 73 FR 66549, Nov. 10, 2008. The § 4.76 source note prints 73 FR 66549, Nov. 10, 2008.

DC 6063 row that uses the 20/200 words — Anatomical loss of one eye. This is a DC 6063 line, not a different DC 6064 percentage.

Rating %: 70

Criteria (verbatim). In the other eye 20/200 (6/60)

Superscript 1 is on the DC 6064 heading, “No more than light perception in one eye:”. The 70 percent cell for 20/200 in the other eye does not carry that superscript. Footnote 1 of the central-acuity table reads: Review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350.

The DC 6063 heading also carries superscript 1: “Anatomical loss of one eye:”. Its “In the other eye 20/200 (6/60)” cell is 70. The DC 6064 cell with the same other-eye words is 70, and the first eye on that row is no more than light perception, not anatomical loss.

On both headings, 10/200 (3/60) in the other eye is 90 and 15/200 (4.5/60) is 80. The grids are not the same farther down. DC 6063 rates 20/70 (6/21) in the other eye at 60. DC 6064 rates that other eye at 50.

Appendix B says “Vision in 1 eye” and “Other eye,” and it puts a period after (6/60). Section 4.79 says “In the other eye,” and those rating-table cells do not end with a period. Appendix B uses the numeral “1” in “Anatomical loss of 1 eye:”. The rating table says “one eye.”

Appendix B’s heading “Blindness in 1 eye, only light perception:” uses 6067 through 6070, not 6064. “Other eye 20/200 (6/60).” under that heading is 6068. Those index numbers are not the DC 6064 rows in the rating table.

38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just. 38 CFR § 4.31 says that in every instance where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation for a diagnostic code, a zero percent evaluation shall be assigned when the requirements for a compensable evaluation are not met. DC 6064’s lowest printed cell is 30, for 20/40 (6/12) in the other eye. The code does not print a 0 line.

38 CFR § 4.75(c), subject to 38 CFR 3.383(a), says that if visual impairment of only one eye is service-connected, the visual acuity of the other eye will be considered to be 20/40 for purposes of evaluating the service-connected visual impairment. Paragraph (d) says the evaluation for visual impairment of one eye must not exceed 30 percent unless there is anatomical loss of the eye. The DC 6064 cell for 20/40 (6/12) in the other eye is 30. The higher DC 6064 cells name a worse other eye. Paragraph (d) does not name a diagnostic code. Anatomical loss of one eye is the DC 6063 heading. Paragraph (e) names diagnostic code 6063 for a 10 percent increase when the claimant has anatomical loss of one eye and is unable to wear a prosthesis. It does not name DC 6064. Paragraph (f) says that when evaluating visual impairment, refer to 38 CFR 3.350.

38 CFR § 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on the basis of corrected distance vision with central fixation, even if a central scotoma is present. Paragraph (b)(4) says that where a reported visual acuity is between two sequentially listed visual acuities, use the visual acuity which permits the higher evaluation.

DC 6062 is “No more than light perception in both eyes,” at 100. DC 6061 is anatomical loss of both eyes, at 100. DC 6065 in the rating table is vision in one eye 5/200 (1.5/60). This page does not copy those headings onto DC 6064.

This catalog slug is the Appendix B line “Other eye 20/200 (6/60).” The same index also prints 6064 for “Other eye 10/200 (3/60).” and “Other eye 15/200 (4.5/60).” Those two lines have their own catalog pages, 10/200 and 15/200. The 6068 catalog page is the Appendix B line “Other eye 20/200 (6/60).” under blindness in 1 eye, only light perception.

What the words mean in your records

Two official uses of the number 6064

The rating table assigns 6064 to no more than light perception in one eye. Appendix B assigns 6064 to three “Other eye” lines under anatomical loss of 1 eye. The 20/200 line is 70 percent on the DC 6064 grid and 70 percent on the DC 6063 grid. The first-eye headings are not the same words.

The 70 percent cell has no superscript

On DC 6064, superscript 1 sits on the heading. Footnote 1 says to review special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. The 70 percent cell for 20/200 in the other eye does not carry that superscript.

20/200 is not the whole code

The rating-table DC 6064 also prints 100, 90, 80, 60, 50, 40, and 30 for the other other-eye acuities. The catalog slug names one Appendix B line.

Evidence that speaks to each level

The DC 6064 pair

What the rater needs to see. No more than light perception in one eye, and one of the other-eye acuities the DC 6064 rows list, from 5/200 through 20/40. The 20/200 (6/60) other eye on this code is 70.

Where that usually lives. The visual-acuity examination. Section 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on corrected distance vision.

The Appendix B 20/200 line, read as DC 6063

What the rater needs to see. If the record is anatomical loss of one eye with 20/200 (6/60) in the other eye, that pair is a DC 6063 cell at 70, with superscript 1 on the DC 6063 heading. The percentage matches the DC 6064 cell. The heading does not.

Where that usually lives. The examination that says anatomical loss, and the DC 6063 row.

VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Eye Conditions” under Ophthalmological. The file linked from that list is Eye Conditions.

The exam form

The percentages in the first table on this page are DC 6064 cells. The 70 percent cell in the third table is a DC 6063 cell with the same other-eye words. This page does not say the form chooses between those codes.

Related codes and how they interact

Light perception in both eyes is DC 6062.

DC 6062 says both eyes. DC 6064 says one eye, then lists the other eye. Appendix B’s “Blindness in 1 eye, only light perception” heading uses 6067 through 6070.

Secondary conditions and presumptions

The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “6064” or “light perception.” The DC 6064 footnote points to § 3.350, not to § 3.309.

A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.

Short answers

What is the VA rating for DC 6064?

In the 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 4.79, Diagnostic Code 6064 is no more than light perception in one eye, from 100 to 30 depending on the other eye. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.

What is anatomical loss of one eye with 20/200 in the other eye?

DC 6063, “Anatomical loss of one eye:”, “In the other eye 20/200 (6/60),” is 70. Superscript 1 is on that DC 6063 heading. Appendix B still numbers that index line 6064.

FAQ

What does diagnostic code 6064 rate in the current table?

No more than light perception in one eye. The other eye is 100 at 5/200, 90 at 10/200, 80 at 15/200, 70 at 20/200, 60 at 20/100, 50 at 20/70, 40 at 20/50, and 30 at 20/40. Superscript 1 is on the heading. Education only.

Why does this page’s address say other eye 20/200?

Appendix B still prints “6064 Other eye 20/200 (6/60).” under anatomical loss of 1 eye. The catalog slug follows that index line. In § 4.79, that other-eye pair under anatomical loss of one eye is a DC 6063 row at 70. The DC 6064 row that says 20/200 in the other eye is also 70, and the first eye is no more than light perception.

Are the other two Appendix B 6064 lines this page?

They are the same index number, under the same “Anatomical loss of 1 eye” heading, for 10/200 and 15/200. Each has its own catalog slug. This page is the 20/200 slug. On both the DC 6063 grid and the DC 6064 grid, those other-eye words are 90 and 80.
