38 CFR Part 4 — 38 CFR § 4.79
Other eye 20/40 (6/12) — VA Diagnostic Code 6077
Eye
Diagnostic code
6077
Appendix B to Part 4, version date 2026-10-01, prints Diagnostic Code 6077 three times, each time as “Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” The rating table in 38 CFR § 4.79 for that same version date does not list Diagnostic Code 6077. Central visual acuity in that table runs from DC 6061 through DC 6066. The three Appendix B headings that use 6077 are printed under DC 6066, with different words and with percentages on the 6066 rows.
Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was up to date as of 2026-10-01 and last amended on 2026-08-27. The § 4.79 source note prints 73 FR 66550, Nov. 10, 2008, as amended at 83 FR 15321, Apr. 10, 2018. The § 4.75 source note prints 73 FR 66549, Nov. 10, 2008. The § 4.76 source note prints 73 FR 66549, Nov. 10, 2008.

Appendix B says “Vision in 1 eye” and “Other eye.” Section 4.79 says “Vision in one eye” and “In the other eye.” The index uses a period after (6/12). The rating-table cells do not.
Appendix B also prints 6077 only under those three “Vision in 1 eye” headings. The 20/100, 20/70, 20/50, and 20/40 headings in the index use 6078 or 6079 for “Other eye 20/40 (6/12),” not 6077. Those other index numbers are also absent from the § 4.79 table.
The central-acuity table’s footnote 1 says: Review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. The three DC 6066 “20/40 (6/12)” cells quoted above do not carry that superscript.
38 CFR § 4.76(b)(1) says to evaluate central visual acuity on the basis of corrected distance vision with central fixation, even if a central scotoma is present, and then states the exception when the lens required to correct distance vision in the poorer eye differs by more than three diopters. 38 CFR § 4.75(b) says the examination must be conducted by a licensed optometrist or a licensed ophthalmologist. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just.
38 CFR § 4.75(c) says that, subject to 38 CFR 3.383(a), if visual impairment of only one eye is service-connected, the visual acuity of the other eye will be considered to be 20/40 for purposes of evaluating the service-connected visual impairment. That sentence is not an Appendix B line and it is not a DC 6077 row. Paragraph (d) says the evaluation for visual impairment of one eye must not exceed 30 percent unless there is anatomical loss of the eye. The DC 6066 cell for 10/200 in one eye and 20/40 in the other is 30. That 30 is a DC 6066 figure.
The catalog also has a page built from the Appendix B line 6066 Other eye 20/40 (6/12), under “Anatomical loss of 1 eye.” In § 4.79, DC 6066 is the heading “Visual acuity in one eye 10/200 (3/60) or better,” and DC 6063 is anatomical loss of one eye. This page does not treat the index number 6077 as a percentage of its own.

What the words mean in your records
The rating table stops at 6066
DC 6061 through DC 6066 are the central-acuity codes in the 2026-10-01 text of § 4.79. Searching that section’s XML for 6077 returns no hits. The next table is Ratings for Impairment of Visual Fields, beginning at DC 6080.
Three index lines, one catalog slug
Appendix B repeats “6077 Other eye 20/40 (6/12).” under vision in 1 eye of 10/200 (3/60), 15/200 (4.5/60), and 20/200 (6/60). The catalog slug was built from “Other eye 20/40 (6/12)” and does not say which of the three headings it came from.
1 eye and one eye
The index uses the numeral “1.” The rating table uses the word “one.” The index says “Other eye.” The rating table says “In the other eye.”
Evidence that speaks to each level
The acuity pair
What the rater needs to see. Corrected distance vision in each eye, because the DC 6066 rows are pairs. The three pairs that Appendix B numbers 6077 are 10/200, 15/200, or 20/200 in one eye, with 20/40 in the other.
Where that usually lives. The eye examination § 4.75(b) and § 4.76 describe, from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.
One service-connected eye
What the rater needs to see. Whether § 4.75(c) is the sentence in use: visual impairment of only one eye service-connected, with the other eye considered 20/40, subject to § 3.383(a).
Where that usually lives. The decision’s statement of which eye is service-connected.
VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Eye Conditions” under Ophthalmological. The file is Eye Conditions.
The exam form
DC 6077 is an index number. The percentages quoted on this page are DC 6066 cells. This page does not say the form assigns a percentage to 6077.
Related codes and how they interact
The same other-eye words appear under later index numbers.
Under vision in 1 eye of 20/100, 20/70, 20/50, or 20/40, Appendix B uses 6078 or 6079 for “Other eye 20/40 (6/12),” not 6077. Those numbers are not in the § 4.79 table either. The DC 6066 block continues with its own 20/100, 20/70, 20/50, and 20/40 headings. This page quotes only the three pairs Appendix B numbers 6077.
Secondary conditions and presumptions
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “6077,” “20/40,” or “blindness.” It does not assign this index line.
Short answers
Does § 4.79 assign a percentage to diagnostic code 6077?
No. The 2026-10-01 rating table does not list Diagnostic Code 6077. The 30 and 20 figures on this page are DC 6066 cells for the acuity pairs Appendix B still numbers 6077. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.
Which special-monthly-compensation footnote is on those 20/40 cells?
The three DC 6066 “In the other eye 20/40 (6/12)” cells quoted here do not carry superscript 1. Footnote 1 of the central-acuity table says to review special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. It is printed on earlier rows in that table.
FAQ
What is the VA rating for DC 6077?
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 4.79 does not list Diagnostic Code 6077, so that section does not print a percentage for it. Appendix B still indexes 6077 as “Other eye 20/40 (6/12)” under three “Vision in 1 eye” headings. Those acuity pairs are DC 6066 rows: 30 when one eye is 10/200 (3/60), and 20 when one eye is 15/200 (4.5/60) or 20/200 (6/60), each with 20/40 (6/12) in the other eye. Education only.
Why does the catalog still say DC 6077?
The catalog slug follows Appendix B, which still prints 6077. The rating table was amended at 83 FR 15321, Apr. 10, 2018, and the 2026-10-01 text of § 4.79 ends the central-acuity codes at 6066.
Is 20/40 in the other eye always DC 6077?
No. Appendix B uses 6077 for that other-eye line under 10/200, 15/200, and 20/200 in the first eye. It uses 6078 or 6079 when the first eye is 20/100, 20/70, 20/50, or 20/40. Section 4.75(c) is a separate sentence about considering the other eye as 20/40 when only one eye is service-connected.
