Visual field defects — VA Diagnostic Code 6080
Eye
Diagnostic code
6080
38 CFR § 4.79 lists Diagnostic Code 6080 as “Visual field defects:” in the table captioned “Ratings for Impairment of Visual Fields.” The title ends with a colon. The rating cell on that title is empty. Homonymous hemianopsia is 30. Half-field losses and concentric contraction print bilateral and unilateral numbers, and several headings are followed by an “Or evaluate each affected eye” line. Appendix B to Part 4 indexes the code as “Field vision, impairment.”

“Homonymous hemianopsia” does not end with a period. The half-field headings end with colons. The “Or evaluate” lines do not end with periods, and they do not say “if that would result in a higher evaluation.”
Superscript 1 is on the heading “With remaining field of 5 degrees:”. The table footer reads: “Review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350.” The footer does not state a payment amount. The other concentric-contraction headings do not carry that superscript.
Bilateral and unilateral under a 5-degree remaining field are 100 and 30. The “Or evaluate” line for that band is 5/200 (1.5/60). That acuity is not a second percentage printed beside the 100.
38 CFR § 4.77(b) says to determine the average concentric contraction of the visual field of each eye by measuring the remaining visual field (in degrees) at each of eight principal meridians 45 degrees apart, adding them, and dividing the sum by eight. 38 CFR § 4.76a prints Table III, normal visual field extent at 8 principal meridians, with a total of 500. Its example of computation, taken from Figure 1, states: remaining field 500° minus 320° = 180°. 180° ÷ 8 = 22 1/2° average concentric contraction. That example stops at the average. It does not assign a DC 6080 percentage. Paragraph (a) of § 4.77 says examiners must use either Goldmann kinetic perimetry or automated perimetry using Humphrey Model 750, Octopus Model 101, or later versions of these perimetric devices with simulated kinetic Goldmann testing capability. The examiner must document the results for at least 16 meridians 22 1/2 degrees apart for each eye.
38 CFR § 4.77(c) says that to determine the evaluation for visual impairment when both decreased visual acuity and visual field defect are present in one or both eyes and are service connected, separately evaluate the visual acuity and visual field defect (expressed as a level of visual acuity), and combine them under the provisions of § 4.25. 38 CFR § 4.14 says the evaluation of the same disability under various diagnoses is to be avoided, and that the evaluation of the same manifestation under different diagnoses is to be avoided.
38 CFR § 4.75(b) requires examination by a licensed optometrist or a licensed ophthalmologist for visual impairment, and it says the examiner must identify the disease, injury, or other pathologic process responsible for any visual impairment found. Examinations of visual fields or muscle function will be conducted only when there is a medical indication of disease or injury that may be associated with visual field defect or impaired muscle function. Unless medically contraindicated, the fundus must be examined with the claimant's pupils dilated. Paragraph (c) says that, subject to 38 CFR 3.383(a), if visual impairment of only one eye is service-connected, the visual acuity of the other eye will be considered to be 20/40 for purposes of evaluating the service-connected visual impairment. Paragraph (d) says the evaluation for visual impairment of one eye must not exceed 30 percent unless there is anatomical loss of the eye. Paragraph (f) says that when evaluating visual impairment, refer to 38 CFR 3.350 to determine whether the claimant may be entitled to special monthly compensation. Paragraph (f) does not state a payment amount. Paragraph (a) of § 4.75 says the evaluation of visual impairment is based on impairment of visual acuity (excluding developmental errors of refraction), visual field, and muscle function. Paragraph (c) names the visual acuity of the other eye. It does not print a visual-field number for the other eye. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just. 38 CFR § 4.31 says that in every instance where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation for a diagnostic code, a zero percent evaluation shall be assigned when the requirements for a compensable evaluation are not met. DC 6080 does not print a 0 in any rating cell of its own. The central-acuity table earlier in § 4.79 prints 0 when vision in one eye is 20/40 (6/12) and vision in the other eye is 20/40 (6/12). That 0 is not a DC 6080 line.
DC 6081 is “Scotoma, unilateral:”. Its minimum is 10, with scotoma affecting at least one-quarter of the visual field (quadrantanopsia) or with centrally located scotoma of any size. The next cell says: “Alternatively, evaluate based on visual impairment due to scotoma, if that would result in a higher evaluation.” That “higher evaluation” sentence is on DC 6081. The DC 6080 lines say “Or evaluate.” Appendix B indexes 6081 as “Scotoma.” and 6080 as “Field vision, impairment.” DC 6090 is in the next table, “Ratings for Impairment of Muscle Function.”
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “visual field” or “hemianopsia.” It does not assign DC 6080.

What the words mean in your records
The index uses different words
The rating table says “Visual field defects:”. Appendix B says “Field vision, impairment.” The catalog slug follows the index words.
“Or evaluate” is the line that is printed
Temporal and inferior half-field losses name 20/70 (6/21). Nasal and superior half-field losses name 20/50 (6/15). The concentric-contraction bands name 5/200 (1.5/60), 20/200 (6/60), 20/100 (6/30), 20/70 (6/21), and 20/50 (6/15). Those lines do not say “whichever” and do not say “if that would result in a higher evaluation.”
The 5-degree heading carries the footnote
Superscript 1 sits on “With remaining field of 5 degrees:”. The footer says to review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. It does not state a payment amount.
Evidence that speaks to each level
A half-field or homonymous hemianopsia
What the rater needs to see. The finding the row names: homonymous hemianopsia at 30, or loss of the temporal, nasal, inferior, or superior half, at the bilateral or unilateral number that heading prints.
Where that usually lives. The visual-field examination § 4.77(a) describes.
Concentric contraction
What the rater needs to see. The remaining-field band: 5 degrees, 6 to 15 degrees, 16 to 30 degrees, 31 to 45 degrees, or 46 to 60 degrees, bilateral or unilateral. Section 4.77(b) describes the average of eight principal meridians.
Where that usually lives. The same visual-field examination, and the average § 4.76a illustrates without assigning that example a percentage.
VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Eye Conditions” under Ophthalmological. The file is Eye Conditions.
The exam form
DC 6080 prints the half-field and concentric-contraction lines. This page does not say the eye form replaces those lines or the § 4.77 examination sentences.
Related codes and how they interact
Scotoma has the “higher evaluation” sentence.
DC 6081 says to evaluate alternatively based on visual impairment due to scotoma if that would result in a higher evaluation, with a minimum of 10 in the case the minimum line names. DC 6080’s alternative lines say “Or evaluate each affected eye” as a stated acuity. Diplopia is DC 6090, in the muscle-function table.
Secondary conditions and presumptions
Section 3.309 does not contain “visual field” or “hemianopsia.” This page does not add DC 6080 to a presumptive row.
A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.
Short answers
How does VA rate visual field defects under DC 6080?
Under 38 CFR § 4.79, Diagnostic Code 6080 prints 30 for homonymous hemianopsia, then bilateral and unilateral ratings for loss of the temporal, nasal, inferior, and superior halves, and for concentric contraction by remaining-field band. Several of those headings are followed by an “Or evaluate each affected eye” acuity line. Section 4.77(b) measures average concentric contraction at eight principal meridians. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.
What does Appendix B call DC 6080?
“Field vision, impairment.” The rating table says “Visual field defects:”. Education only.
FAQ
What does DC 6080 print for homonymous hemianopsia?
30. The line does not end with a period, and it does not split into bilateral and unilateral. Education only.
What is the 5-degree remaining field?
Bilateral is 100. Unilateral is 30. The next line says to evaluate each affected eye as 5/200 (1.5/60). Superscript 1 on the 5-degree heading points to a review for special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350. That footer does not state a payment amount.
Do the “Or evaluate” lines say “whichever is higher”?
No. They say “Or evaluate each affected eye” as a stated visual acuity. DC 6081 is the row that says “if that would result in a higher evaluation.”
