Acquired hemolytic anemia — VA Diagnostic Code 7723
Hematologic / lymphatic
Diagnostic code
7723
38 CFR § 4.117 lists Diagnostic Code 7723 as “Acquired hemolytic anemia:”. The title ends with a colon. The lines are 100, 60, 30, 10, and 0. Two notes follow. Appendix B to Part 4 indexes “Acquired hemolytic anemia.” The catalog slug is dc-7723-acquired-hemolytic-anemia.
Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was last amended on 2026-08-27. On 2026-10-05 the titles list reports up to date as of 2026-10-02. The rating criteria at each level
7723 Acquired hemolytic anemia
Rating %: 100
Criteria (verbatim). Requiring a bone marrow transplant or continuous intravenous or immunosuppressive therapy (e.g., prednisone, Cytoxan, azathioprine, or rituximab)
Rating %: 60
Criteria (verbatim). Requiring immunosuppressive medication 4 or more times per 12-month period
Rating %: 30
Criteria (verbatim). Requiring at least 2 but less than 4 courses of immunosuppressive therapy per 12-month period
Rating %: 10
Criteria (verbatim). Requiring one course of immunosuppressive therapy per 12-month period
Rating %: 0
Criteria (verbatim). Asymptomatic
| Rating % | Criteria (verbatim) |
|---|---|
| 100 | Requiring a bone marrow transplant or continuous intravenous or immunosuppressive therapy (e.g., prednisone, Cytoxan, azathioprine, or rituximab) |
| 60 | Requiring immunosuppressive medication 4 or more times per 12-month period |
| 30 | Requiring at least 2 but less than 4 courses of immunosuppressive therapy per 12-month period |
| 10 | Requiring one course of immunosuppressive therapy per 12-month period |
| 0 | Asymptomatic |
Note (1): A 100 percent evaluation for bone marrow transplant shall be assigned as of the date of hospital admission and shall continue for six months after hospital discharge with a mandatory VA examination six months following hospital discharge. Any reduction in evaluation based upon that or any subsequent examination shall be subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e) of this chapter
Note (2): Separately evaluate splenectomy under diagnostic code 7706 and combine with an evaluation under diagnostic code 7723
Neither note ends with a period. The five percentage lines do not end with a period. The 100 percent line names prednisone, Cytoxan, azathioprine, or rituximab as examples. It does not add other drugs.
The schedule title ends with a colon. Appendix B ends with a period.
38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just. 38 CFR § 4.14 says the evaluation of the same disability under various diagnoses is to be avoided, and that the evaluation of the same manifestation under different diagnoses is to be avoided.
Note (2) names DC 7706, splenectomy, and says to combine that evaluation with an evaluation under DC 7723. The 20 percent splenectomy cell stays on DC 7706.
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “hemolytic,” “7723,” or “acquired hemolytic anemia.” This page does not add DC 7723 to a presumptive row.

What the words mean in your records
The examples stay inside the parentheses
The 100 percent line says “e.g., prednisone, Cytoxan, azathioprine, or rituximab.” Cytoxan is the word the table prints. This page does not add a generic name the cell does not print.
Courses versus times
The 60 percent line says “immunosuppressive medication 4 or more times per 12-month period.” The 30 and 10 percent lines say “courses of immunosuppressive therapy.” The table uses those different words. This page does not treat them as synonyms the regulation did not write.
Note (1) cites § 3.105(e)
Unlike DC 7719 Note (2), this note prints “(e).” The 100 percent for bone marrow transplant runs from hospital admission and continues for six months after discharge, with the examination at that six-month point. A reduction is subject to § 3.105(e).
Evidence that speaks to each level
100, 60, 30, 10, or 0
What the rater needs to see. Bone marrow transplant or continuous intravenous or immunosuppressive therapy, or the count of immunosuppressive medication or courses in the 12-month period, or that the condition is asymptomatic.
Where that usually lives. The hematology record and the treatment dates in that 12-month period.
Note (2)
What the rater needs to see. Whether a splenectomy was also evaluated under DC 7706 and combined with DC 7723.
Where that usually lives. The surgical record and the rating that names both codes.
VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Hematologic and Lymphatic Conditions, Including Leukemia” under Hematologic and Lymphatic. The file is Hematologic and Lymphatic Conditions, Including Leukemia.
The exam form
DC 7723 prints 100, 60, 30, 10, and 0. This page does not say the form replaces those lines.
Related codes and how they interact
Secondary conditions and presumptions
Section 3.309 does not contain “hemolytic” or “7723.” This page does not add DC 7723 to a presumptive row.
A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.
Short answers
How does VA rate acquired hemolytic anemia under DC 7723?
Under 38 CFR § 4.117, Diagnostic Code 7723 rates acquired hemolytic anemia at 100, 60, 30, 10, or 0 percent. Note (1) times a bone-marrow-transplant evaluation from hospital admission through six months after discharge. Note (2) evaluates splenectomy under DC 7706 and combines it with DC 7723. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.
Why does the 60 percent line say “times” and the 30 percent line say “courses”?
Those are the words in the cells. The 60 percent line is immunosuppressive medication 4 or more times per 12-month period. The 30 percent line is at least 2 but less than 4 courses of immunosuppressive therapy per 12-month period. Education only.
FAQ
What are the DC 7723 percentages?
100, 60, 30, 10, and 0. The 100 percent line is bone marrow transplant or continuous intravenous or immunosuppressive therapy. The examples in that line are prednisone, Cytoxan, azathioprine, or rituximab. Education only.
Does Note (1) end with a period?
No. Neither note ends with a period. Note (1) cites § 3.105(e). Note (2) names diagnostic code 7706.
Does the splenectomy percentage move onto DC 7723?
No. Note (2) says to separately evaluate splenectomy under diagnostic code 7706 and combine it with an evaluation under diagnostic code 7723. The 20 percent cell remains on DC 7706.
