Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
What is SMC?
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) provides additional compensation beyond regular disability ratings for veterans with particularly severe service-connected disabilities. These include loss or loss of use of limbs, blindness, need for aid and attendance, and being bedridden.
SMC amounts are added on top of your base disability compensation and can significantly increase your monthly payment.

Key Points
- •SMC is not a disability rating percentage - it's a separate additional payment
- •You can receive SMC even with a lower disability rating if you meet the criteria
- •Multiple SMC levels can sometimes combine for higher payments
- •"Loss of use" requires complete functional loss, not partial limitation
- •Work with a VSO or attorney - SMC law is complex and mistakes can cost thousands per year
Disclaimer: SMC rates shown are approximate 2026 values. Some SMCs have multiple tiers or combine with others. Always verify eligibility and rates with the VA or a VA-accredited representative.
