One of the highest levels of SMC for catastrophic disabilities.
What is SMC-L?
SMC-L is awarded for the most severe service-connected disabilities involving loss or loss of use of multiple extremities, severe blindness, or being permanently bedridden/needing regular aid and attendance.
Qualifying Conditions (any one qualifies)
- •Anatomical loss or loss of use of both feet
- •Anatomical loss or loss of use of both hands
- •Anatomical loss or loss of use of one hand and one foot
- •Blindness in both eyes with visual acuity of 5/200 or less
- •Permanently bedridden due to service-connected disabilities
- •In need of regular aid and attendance due to service-connected disabilities
Evidence Requirements
- 📋Medical Evidence: Surgical records, prosthetic device prescriptions, specialist evaluations
- 📋Functional Capacity Evaluations: Documentation of inability to perform daily activities
- 📋Aid & Attendance Evidence: Caregiver statements, daily care logs, nursing assessments
- 📋Service Connection Proof: In-service injury/event documentation or nexus to existing service-connected condition
Additional SMC Levels
SMC-L can combine with higher levels (M, N, O, P, R, etc.) for even more severe combinations of disabilities or additional aid and attendance needs.
