38 CFR Part 4 — 38 CFR § 4.118

Hyperhidrosis — VA Diagnostic Code 7832

Skin

Diagnostic code

7832

38 CFR § 4.118 lists Diagnostic Code 7832 as “Hyperhidrosis:”. The title ends with a colon. The rating cell on that title is empty. Unable to handle paper or tools because of moisture, and unresponsive to therapy, is 30. Able to handle paper or tools after therapy is 0. Appendix B to Part 4 indexes “Hyperhidrosis.”

Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was up to date as of 2026-10-01 and last amended on 2026-08-27. The § 4.118 source note prints 67 FR 49596, July 31, 2002; 67 FR 58448, 58449, Sept. 16, 2002; 73 FR 54710, Oct. 23, 2008; 77 FR 2910, Jan. 20, 2012; 83 FR 32597, July 13, 2018; 83 FR 38663, Aug. 7, 2018.

The rating criteria at each level

7832 Hyperhidrosis

Rating %: 30

Criteria (verbatim). Unable to handle paper or tools because of moisture, and unresponsive to therapy

Rating %: 0

Criteria (verbatim). Able to handle paper or tools after therapy

Neither line ends with a period. The 30 percent line joins the two findings with “, and”. The 0 percent line is its own row.

The General Rating Formula For The Skin is captioned for DCs 7806, 7809, 7813-7816, 7820-7822, and 7824. DC 7832 is not in that list.

Section 4.118(a) says that, for the purposes of this section, systemic therapy is treatment administered through any route (orally, injection, suppository, intranasally) other than the skin, and topical therapy is treatment administered through the skin. The DC 7832 lines say “therapy” and “unresponsive to therapy.” They do not use the words systemic or topical. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just.

The 0 percent line is printed on this code. 38 CFR § 4.31 says that in every instance where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation for a diagnostic code, a zero percent evaluation shall be assigned when the requirements for a compensable evaluation are not met. That section is the rule for a code that does not print a zero percent evaluation. DC 7832 does print one.

What the words mean in your records

Paper or tools

Both lines use those words. The 30 percent line adds “because of moisture, and unresponsive to therapy.” The 0 percent line says “Able to handle paper or tools after therapy.”

Not the general skin formula

The formula caption names DCs 7806, 7809, 7813-7816, 7820-7822, and 7824. Hyperhidrosis is DC 7832. Its percentages are the two lines under that code.

A printed zero

The 0 percent line is on the code. It is not supplied by § 4.31.

Evidence that speaks to each level

30

What the rater needs to see. Unable to handle paper or tools because of moisture, and unresponsive to therapy. The line uses both findings.

Where that usually lives. The skin examination and the treatment record that describes the therapy and the response.

0

What the rater needs to see. Able to handle paper or tools after therapy.

Where that usually lives. The same examination.

VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Skin Diseases” under Dermatological. The file is Skin Diseases.

The exam form

DC 7832 prints 30 and 0. This page does not say the form replaces those lines. The general skin formula is a different list of codes.

Related codes and how they interact

Alopecia areata is the previous code.

DC 7831 prints 10 for loss of all body hair and 0 for loss of hair limited to scalp and face. DC 7832 is hyperhidrosis. The next code, DC 7833, is malignant melanoma, and its rating cell is an instruction rather than 30 and 0.

Secondary conditions and presumptions

The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “hyperhidrosis.” This page does not add DC 7832 to a presumptive row.

A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.

Short answers

What is the VA rating for hyperhidrosis?

Under 38 CFR § 4.118, Diagnostic Code 7832 is 30 or 0 percent. The 30 percent line is inability to handle paper or tools because of moisture, and unresponsiveness to therapy. The 0 percent line is ability to handle paper or tools after therapy. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.

Where does § 4.118 define therapy?

Paragraph (a) defines systemic therapy and topical therapy for the section. The DC 7832 lines say “therapy” and do not repeat the words systemic or topical.
