Pancreatitis, chronic — VA Diagnostic Code 7347

Digestive

Diagnostic code

7347

38 CFR § 4.114 lists Diagnostic Code 7347 as “Pancreatitis, chronic:”. The lines are 100, 60, and 30. Note (1) says appropriate diagnostic studies must confirm that abdominal pain in this condition results from pancreatitis. Note (2) says to separately rate endocrine dysfunction resulting in diabetes due to pancreatic insufficiency under DC 7913.

Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was up to date as of 2026-10-01 and last amended on 2026-08-27. The § 4.114 source note prints 29 FR 6718, May 22, 1964, as amended at 34 FR 5063, Mar. 11, 1969; 40 FR 42540, Sept. 15, 1975; 41 FR 11301, Mar. 18, 1976; 66 FR 29488, May 31, 2001; 89 FR 19743, Mar. 20, 2024.

The rating criteria at each level

7347 Pancreatitis, chronic

Rating %: 100

Criteria (verbatim). Daily episodes of abdominal or mid-back pain that require three or more hospitalizations per year; and pain management by a physician; and maldigestion and malabsorption requiring dietary restriction and pancreatic enzyme supplementation

Rating %: 60

Criteria (verbatim). Three or more episodes of abdominal or mid-back pain per year and at least one episode per year requiring hospitalization for management either of complications related to abdominal pain or complications of tube enteral feeding

Rating %: 30

Criteria (verbatim). At least one episode per year of abdominal or mid-back pain that requires ongoing outpatient medical treatment for pain, digestive problems, or management of related complications including but not limited to cyst, pseudocyst, intestinal obstruction, or ascites

Note (1): Appropriate diagnostic studies must confirm that abdominal pain in this condition results from pancreatitis.

Note (2): Separately rate endocrine dysfunction resulting in diabetes due to pancreatic insufficiency under DC 7913 (Diabetes mellitus).

The 100 percent line requires daily episodes, three or more hospitalizations per year, pain management by a physician, and maldigestion and malabsorption requiring dietary restriction and pancreatic enzyme supplementation. The 60 percent line is three or more episodes per year and at least one hospitalization per year for one of the two complication groups it names. The 30 percent line is at least one episode per year that requires ongoing outpatient medical treatment. None of the three lines ends with a period. 38 CFR § 4.31 says that in every instance where the schedule does not provide a zero percent evaluation for a diagnostic code, a zero percent evaluation shall be assigned when the requirements for a compensable evaluation are not met. DC 7347 does not print a 10 or a 0.

The opening sentence of § 4.114 includes “7345 through 7350 inclusive” in the codes that are not combined with each other. DC 7347 is inside that span. DC 7357 says that following total or partial pancreatectomy, evaluate under pancreatitis, chronic (DC 7347), among other named codes, whichever provides the highest evaluation, and it prints a minimum of 30. DC 7357 is inside “7355 through 7357 inclusive,” which is also on the do-not-combine list. Note (2) of DC 7347 names DC 7913, diabetes mellitus. The public page is the diabetes guide. The do-not-combine sentence does not name 7913. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just.

What the words mean in your records

Daily episodes are the 100 percent line

The 100 percent line says “Daily episodes” and “three or more hospitalizations per year,” plus physician pain management and the maldigestion and malabsorption requirements. The 60 percent line says “Three or more episodes” per year, not daily episodes.

Diabetes is a separate code in the note

Note (2) says to separately rate endocrine dysfunction resulting in diabetes due to pancreatic insufficiency under DC 7913. That is the note’s instruction. It is not a percentage on the 100, 60, or 30 line.

Evidence that speaks to each level

100, 60, or 30

What the rater needs to see. The episode count, hospitalizations, and the treatment or malabsorption findings the line names. Note (1) requires appropriate diagnostic studies confirming that the abdominal pain results from pancreatitis.

Where that usually lives. The diagnostic studies Note (1) names, and the hospital and outpatient records.

Note (2)

What the rater needs to see. Endocrine dysfunction resulting in diabetes due to pancreatic insufficiency, rated under DC 7913, when that note is the instruction being used.

Where that usually lives. The endocrine findings, read against DC 7913. The diabetes guide is the public page for that code.

VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Pancreas” under Gastrointestinal. The file is Pancreas.

The exam form

DC 7347 prints 100, 60, and 30, and two notes. This page does not say the form replaces those lines.

Related codes and how they interact

Post-pancreatectomy syndrome names this code as one choice.

DC 7357 says to evaluate under DC 7347 or the other codes that sentence lists, whichever provides the highest evaluation. It also prints a minimum of 30. Both codes are on the § 4.114 do-not-combine list.

Secondary conditions and presumptions

The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309 does not contain “pancreatitis.” It lists “Cancer of the pancreas.” That sentence does not assign DC 7347.

Note (2) is the schedule’s separate-rating instruction for diabetes due to pancreatic insufficiency. A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.

Short answers

What is the VA rating for chronic pancreatitis?

Under 38 CFR § 4.114, Diagnostic Code 7347 is 100, 60, or 30 percent. Note (1) requires diagnostic studies tying the abdominal pain to pancreatitis. Note (2) separately rates resulting diabetes under DC 7913. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.

Is cancer of the pancreas this code?

Section 3.309 lists “Cancer of the pancreas.” It does not contain “pancreatitis,” and it does not assign DC 7347. DC 7347 is chronic pancreatitis.

FAQ

What percentages does DC 7347 print?

The lines are 100, 60, and 30. The 100 percent line is daily episodes of abdominal or mid-back pain with three or more hospitalizations per year, physician pain management, and maldigestion and malabsorption requiring dietary restriction and pancreatic enzyme supplementation. Education only.

What must confirm the abdominal pain?

Note (1) says appropriate diagnostic studies must confirm that abdominal pain in this condition results from pancreatitis.

Where does diabetes from pancreatic insufficiency go?

Note (2) says to separately rate that endocrine dysfunction under DC 7913, diabetes mellitus. The § 4.114 do-not-combine list does not name 7913.
