Gastritis, chronic — VA Diagnostic Code 7307

Digestive

Diagnostic code

7307

38 CFR § 4.114 lists Diagnostic Code 7307 as “Gastritis, chronic.” The only rating instruction on that row is “Rate as peptic ulcer disease (DC 7304).” The note names four conditions the code includes. The percentage lines are printed under DC 7304, not under DC 7307.

Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was up to date as of 2026-10-01 and last amended on 2026-08-27. The § 4.114 source note prints 29 FR 6718, May 22, 1964, as amended at 34 FR 5063, Mar. 11, 1969; 40 FR 42540, Sept. 15, 1975; 41 FR 11301, Mar. 18, 1976; 66 FR 29488, May 31, 2001; 89 FR 19743, Mar. 20, 2024.

The rating criteria at each level

7307 Gastritis, chronic — the row this code prints

Rating %: —

Criteria (verbatim). Rate as peptic ulcer disease (DC 7304).

Peptic ulcer disease — DC 7304, the code named in the DC 7307 row

Rating %: 100

Criteria (verbatim). Post-operative for perforation or hemorrhage, for three months

Rating %: 60

Criteria (verbatim). Continuous abdominal pain with intermittent vomiting, recurrent hematemesis (vomiting blood) or melena (tarry stools); and manifestations of anemia which require hospitalization at least once in the past 12 months

Rating %: 40

Criteria (verbatim). Episodes of abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, that: last for at least three consecutive days in duration; occur four or more times in the past 12 months; and are managed by daily prescribed medication

Rating %: 20

Criteria (verbatim). Episodes of abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, that: last for at least three consecutive days in duration; occur three times or less in the past 12 months; and are managed by daily prescribed medication

Rating %: 0

Criteria (verbatim). History of peptic ulcer disease documented by endoscopy or diagnostic imaging studies

Note: This diagnostic code includes Helicobacter pylori infection, drug-induced gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and portal-hypertensive gastropathy with varix-related complications.

The DC 7304 note says: After three months at the 100% evaluation, rate on residuals as determined by mandatory VA medical examination. Apply the provisions of § 3.105(e) of this chapter to any change in evaluation based upon that or any subsequent examination.

The DC 7307 rating column is blank. The 100, 60, 40, 20, and 0 lines are the DC 7304 cells. A blank rating cell on the DC 7307 row is not an extra level.

DC 7307’s own row does not print a percentage. It names DC 7304. The 0 percent line is a printed DC 7304 line, “History of peptic ulcer disease documented by endoscopy or diagnostic imaging studies.” The DC 7304 note prints “100%” with a percent sign. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just.

The opening of 38 CFR § 4.114 says: “Do not combine ratings under diagnostic codes 7301 through 7329 inclusive, 7331, 7342, 7345 through 7350 inclusive, 7352, and 7355 through 7357 inclusive, with each other. Instead, when more than one rating is warranted under those diagnostic codes, assign a single evaluation under the diagnostic code that reflects the predominant disability picture, and elevate it to the next higher evaluation if warranted by the severity of the overall disability.” DC 7304 and DC 7307 are both inside 7301 through 7329. The opening sentence is the rule for assigning one evaluation when more than one of those codes is warranted.

What the words mean in your records

Rate as peptic ulcer disease

Those are the words on the DC 7307 row. The schedule title at DC 7304 is “Peptic ulcer disease.” The 2026-10-01 text of § 4.114 does not contain a heading for DC 7305 or DC 7306.

What the note includes

The DC 7307 note names Helicobacter pylori infection, drug-induced gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and portal-hypertensive gastropathy with varix-related complications. The note does not add a percentage.

A 20 percent minimum that is not on DC 7307

DC 7348 says to rate recurrent ulcer following complete vagotomy under DC 7304, with a minimum rating of 20 percent, and to rate post-operative residuals not addressed by that code under DC 7303. That minimum is in the DC 7348 sentence. It is not a line of DC 7307.

Evidence that speaks to each level

The DC 7307 row

What the rater needs to see. A diagnosis the note includes, or another chronic gastritis the rater places on this code, and then the DC 7304 line that matches the findings.

Where that usually lives. Endoscopy, imaging, or the laboratory result the record uses for the named infection or syndrome.

100, 60, 40, 20, or 0 under DC 7304

What the rater needs to see. The DC 7304 cell: three months after perforation or hemorrhage; the 60 percent pain, bleeding, and anemia findings; the episode counts at 40 and 20; or a documented history at 0.

Where that usually lives. The operative note, the hospitalization record, the medication list, and the endoscopy or imaging the 0 percent line names.

VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Stomach and Duodenum” under Gastrointestinal. The file is Stomach and Duodenum.

The exam form

DC 7307 says to rate as DC 7304 and prints the inclusion note. This page does not say the form replaces those lines.

Related codes and how they interact

DC 7304 is the percentage table. The codes are not combined with each other.

The public page for the percentage lines is DC 7304. 38 CFR § 4.14 says the evaluation of the same disability under various diagnoses is to be avoided, and that the evaluation of the same manifestation under different diagnoses is to be avoided. The § 4.114 opening is more specific for this range: do not combine DC 7307 with DC 7304. Assign a single evaluation under the code that reflects the predominant disability picture.

Secondary conditions and presumptions

The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309(a) says “Ulcers, peptic (gastric or duodenal).” It does not say “Gastritis, chronic.” 38 CFR § 3.309(c)(2) says “Peptic ulcer disease.” It does not say gastritis. Those rows stay on DC 7304.

A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.

Short answers

What is the VA rating for chronic gastritis?

Under 38 CFR § 4.114, Diagnostic Code 7307 says to rate chronic gastritis as peptic ulcer disease under Diagnostic Code 7304. The DC 7304 lines are 100, 60, 40, 20, and 0 percent. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.

Does the DC 7348 minimum of 20 percent apply to gastritis?

That minimum is in the DC 7348 sentence about recurrent ulcer following complete vagotomy. It is not printed on DC 7307.

FAQ

How does VA rate chronic gastritis under DC 7307?

The code says to rate as peptic ulcer disease under DC 7304. Those lines are 100, 60, 40, 20, and 0 percent. DC 7307’s own rating column is blank. The note includes Helicobacter pylori infection, drug-induced gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and portal-hypertensive gastropathy with varix-related complications. Education only.

Is chronic gastritis the peptic-ulcer presumption?

Section 3.309(a) names ulcers, peptic (gastric or duodenal). Section 3.309(c)(2) names peptic ulcer disease. Neither sentence says gastritis, chronic.

Can DC 7307 and DC 7304 both be rated?

Section 4.114 says not to combine ratings under diagnostic codes 7301 through 7329 inclusive with each other. Both codes are in that range. The instruction is one evaluation under the code that reflects the predominant disability picture.
