38 CFR Part 4 — 38 CFR § 4.88b
Schistosomiasis — VA Diagnostic Code 6326
Infectious / immune
Diagnostic code
6326
38 CFR § 4.88b lists Diagnostic Code 6326 as “Schistosomiasis.” The percentage line is 0, for acute or asymptomatic chronic disease. The note says to rate residual disability of infection under the appropriate body system. The code does not say to evaluate under the General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases. Section 3.309(b) lists “Schistosomiasis.” Section 3.309(a) does not.
Reviewed 2026-10-05. Text checked against the eCFR versioner full-text XML for 2026-10-01 on 2026-10-05. Title 38 was up to date as of 2026-10-01 and last amended on 2026-08-27. The § 4.88b source note prints 61 FR 39875, July 31, 1996, as amended at 84 FR 28230, June 18, 2019.
The rating criteria at each level
Schistosomiasis — DC 6326
Rating %: 0
Criteria (verbatim). As acute or asymptomatic chronic disease
| Rating % | Criteria (verbatim) |
|---|---|
| 0 | As acute or asymptomatic chronic disease |
Note: Rate under the appropriate body system any residual disability of infection, which includes, but is not limited to, conditions of the liver, intestinal system, female genital tract, genitourinary tract, or central nervous system.
The 0 percent line is printed. It reads “As acute or asymptomatic chronic disease.” The code does not print a 100 percent line for active disease. 38 CFR § 4.7 assigns the higher rating when the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria required for that rating. Otherwise, the lower rating will be assigned. 38 CFR § 4.6 requires each element affecting the evidence to be studied so that decisions will be equitable and just.
The opening note of § 4.88b lists infectious diseases for the long-term health effects in § 3.317(d). Schistosomiasis is not one of the names in that note. The General Rating Formula’s 100 percent line, “For active disease,” is the formula for codes that say to evaluate under it. DC 6326 does not say that.

What the words mean in your records
Acute or asymptomatic chronic disease
Those are the words of the only percentage line, and the rating is 0. The line uses “or.” It covers acute disease and asymptomatic chronic disease in the same cell.
Residuals are examples, not a second schistosomiasis percentage
The note says to rate any residual disability of infection under the appropriate body system. The examples are conditions of the liver, intestinal system, female genital tract, genitourinary tract, or central nervous system. The note says “including, but is not limited to.”
Tropical service, not the one-year chronic list
Section 3.309(b) lists schistosomiasis among the tropical diseases. Section 3.307(a)(4) says a tropical disease must have become manifest to a degree of 10 percent or more within 1 year from the date of separation, or at a time when standard accepted treatises indicate that the incubation period commenced during such service. Section 3.309(a) does not name schistosomiasis, so the chronic-disease periods in § 3.307(a)(3) are not the sentence for this name.
Evidence that speaks to each level
0 — acute or asymptomatic chronic disease
What the rater needs to see. The diagnosis, described as acute disease or as asymptomatic chronic disease. That is the printed line.
Where that usually lives. The diagnosis in the record.
Residuals
What the rater needs to see. A residual disability of infection rated in the body system involved. The note’s examples include liver, intestinal, female genital tract, genitourinary tract, and central nervous system conditions.
Where that usually lives. The examination of that body system, cited under its own diagnostic code.
VA’s public DBQ list, checked October 5, 2026, names “Infectious Diseases (other than HIV-related illness chronic fatigue syndrome and tuberculosis)” under Infectious Diseases. The file is Infectious Diseases (other than HIV-related illness chronic fatigue syndrome and tuberculosis).
The exam form
DC 6326 prints a 0 percent line and a residual note. This page does not say the form replaces that note.
Related codes and how they interact
The residual note names body systems
Liver, intestinal, female genital tract, genitourinary, and central nervous system conditions are examples in the note. Each of those systems has its own schedule. This page does not assign a schistosomiasis percentage on top of the code used for the residual. 38 CFR § 4.14 says the evaluation of the same manifestation under different diagnoses is to be avoided.
Secondary conditions and presumptions
38 CFR § 3.309(b) says the listed tropical diseases shall be granted service connection as a result of tropical service, although not otherwise established as incurred in service, if manifested to a compensable degree within the applicable time limits under § 3.307 or § 3.308 following service in a period of war or following peacetime service, provided the rebuttable presumption provisions of § 3.307 are also satisfied. “Schistosomiasis” is one of the names. The paragraph also covers resultant disorders or diseases originating because of therapy administered in connection with such diseases or as a preventative thereof.
38 CFR § 3.307(a)(4) uses “standard accepted treatises” for the incubation-period alternative to the one-year period. 38 CFR § 3.308(b) applies to a veteran of 6 months or more of peacetime service before January 1, 1947 who contracts a tropical disease listed in § 3.309(b). It uses “standard and accepted treatises.” The text of § 3.308 does not print the word schistosomiasis. It reaches the condition by naming a tropical disease listed in § 3.309(b).
The 2026-10-01 text of 38 CFR § 3.309(e) does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.309(f) does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.309(d) does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.320 does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.320a does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.320b does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.316 does not name it. 38 CFR § 3.317 does not name it. Section 3.309(a) does not name schistosomiasis. Section 3.309(c) does not name it.
A separate question, when a presumption does not decide it, is a medical question on the facts under 38 CFR § 3.310. Paragraph (a) covers disability proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury. Paragraph (b) covers increase in severity and requires a medical baseline.
Short answers
What is the VA rating for DC 6326?
Under 38 CFR § 4.88b, schistosomiasis is rated 0 percent as acute or asymptomatic chronic disease. Residuals of infection are rated under the appropriate body system. Education only. VA decides on the evidence.
Is schistosomiasis a chronic disease under § 3.309(a)?
Section 3.309(a) does not name schistosomiasis. Section 3.309(b) does, as a tropical disease, on the time limits in § 3.307 or § 3.308.
FAQ
How does VA rate schistosomiasis under DC 6326?
The schedule prints 0 percent for acute or asymptomatic chronic disease. The note rates residual disability of infection under the appropriate body system and gives examples: liver, intestinal system, female genital tract, genitourinary tract, or central nervous system. Education only.
Does active schistosomiasis use the 100 percent infectious-disease formula?
DC 6326 does not say to evaluate under the General Rating Formula. The formula’s “For active disease” line is for codes that direct the rater there. DC 6326’s own percentage line is 0 percent for acute or asymptomatic chronic disease.
Which presumption lists schistosomiasis?
Section 3.309(b) lists it as a tropical disease, with the time limits in § 3.307(a)(4) or § 3.308. Section 3.309(a) does not name it. The 2026-10-01 text of §§ 3.309(e), 3.309(f), 3.320, and 3.317 does not name it.
