The short answer
A new rating is not the same clock as a monthly deposit. VA's Review your VA payment history page says: if the decision notice shows at least a 10% disability rating, you'll get your first payment within 15 days. VA Form 21-8764 then says later payments are at the beginning of each month for the prior month. That first-of-month deposit is last month's pay, not "this month's." The mix-up
Veterans get a decision, look at the calendar, and treat a quiet bank account as a lost check. Three different clocks get mashed:
- First payment after a decision notice with at least 10% — VA says within 15 days on the payment-history page and the after you get a rating page.
- Recurring monthly compensation — Form 21-8764: beginning of each month for the prior month.
- Back pay / effective date — a different note. VA disability back pay explained. This page does not rewrite that clock.
What VA actually does — first payment
On Review your VA payment history (last updated May 8, 2026), under "When can I expect my first disability compensation payment?" VA writes: if your decision notice shows at least a 10% disability rating, you'll get your first payment within 15 days.
The same 15-day / at least 10% sentence appears on What to expect after you get a disability rating (last updated July 21, 2026). That page also says: we'll pay you either by direct deposit or check.
If 15 days pass with no payment, both pages point to the Veterans Help Line at 800-827-1000. The payment-history page adds TTY: 711, and both pages list Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. This note does not invent a bank's posting hour. Use the live pages for the current wording.
What VA actually does — recurring pay is for the prior month
VA Form 21-8764 (May 2009) asks, "WHEN WILL YOU RECEIVE YOUR FUNDS?" and answers: "Depending on whether you elect to receive your monthly compensation by check or direct deposit, you should receive your funds within 15 days. Thereafter, your payments will be made at the beginning of each month for the prior month."
After that first-funds window, a deposit that lands at the start of February is for January, as that form writes it — not a promise that February's pay has already posted. VA does not publish a bank weekday on the pages this note quotes. This article does not print a 2026 weekday table.
Text notifications
The same payment-history page says you can get a text message notification every time you receive a recurring disability or pension payment. Sign in to your VA.gov profile, then: Notification settings → Manage notification settings → Payments → Disability and pension deposit notifications → Notify me by text.
If you opt in before or on the 10th of the month, you'll get your first text when you receive that month's recurring payment. If you opt in after the 10th, you'll get your first text with the next month's recurring payment. You don't need to contact VA or opt in again the next month.
Direct deposit and address
Keep this short, as the payment-history page writes it: change your information online, or contact a VA regional benefit office. You can change address and other contact information in your VA.gov profile. Profile address updates apply across disability compensation, pension, claims and appeals, VR&E, and VA health care.
Update VA if marital status, a baby, adoption, or another life change could affect rating or payment. A combined rating of 30% or higher may allow adding eligible dependents — see VA's manage dependents page rather than a rewrite of who counts.
Practical checklist (educational)
- Read the decision notice rating. VA's first-payment 15-day note applies when that notice shows at least 10%.
- If 15 days have passed with no deposit or check, use the Help Line listed on VA's payment-history page (800-827-1000, TTY 711).
- Treat a first-of-month deposit as prior-month pay, per Form 21-8764 — not as proof that "this month" already paid.
- Opt in to disability/pension deposit texts on VA.gov if you want a recurring-payment ping.
- Confirm direct deposit and address in your VA.gov profile.
